Animal News

From our good friend, the Trickster:

For one day, at least, the roadrunner was safe. It seems the coyote was hankering for another kind of fast food. Employees and customers at a downtown Chicago Quiznos sandwich shop were stunned to see a coyote walk through the propped-open front door Tuesday afternoon and lie down in a cooler stocked with fruit juice and soda.

Well, it was pretty warm here Tuesday.

I guess this is sort of a follow-up to the ducks story from yesterday. Have I mentioned, by the way, the two 'possums and the raccoon that regularly visit my back yard? They seem to run shifts, early and late. (Depending on your point of view: "early" is just after sunset, "late" is just before dawn.)

When I was volunteering at the nature reserve a couple of years ago, I discovered that coyotes were sometimes a problem. It's actually a migratory bird refuge, and while it would have been nice to be able to bring in coyotes to clean out the rats, it wouldn't have been so great for the birds, including a few pairs of ducks that were nesting there. (I should mention that this refuge is one of two along the lakefront, right in Lincoln Park. There's another one way out northwest, but still within city limits.)

So, I guess the coyotes will just have to settle for Quiznos.
