The Attorney General of the United States, our chief law enforcement officer, has declined to enforce the law. The House of Representatives has decided to push back. (An astonishing development in itself. We'll see how hard they push.)
The bald-faced effrontery of refusing to enforce the law makes it quite plain that, as has been the case for the past seven years, the ruling paradigm at the White House is politics first. The reason these U.S.Attorneys were fired was political,. the obstruction and obfuscation around the investigation is political. I don't love the idea that the government has become an arm of a political party.
I'm happy that the House is pursuing this, although I have to say I'm not confident that there will be any real outcome. Nor do I think Pelosi's response goes far enough. I think impeachment has to be put back on the table, starting with Mukasey: he is, after all, violating federal law in refusing to pursue these contempt citations.
TPM has been on top of this one: the compilation is here.
