I don't throw phrases like that around very much, and I don't call gays "homosexuals," which I think is insulting. I figure I don't really know what's going on in anyone else's head, but with the Catholic hierarchy, they do so much to make it so obvious that I really don't have much to worry about. Via Box Turtle Bulletin:
The Catholic church — as part of a what it sees as a consistent “pro-life” ethic — opposes the death penalty. But the Vatican’s representative in the United Nations is opposing a measure calling on governments around the world to decriminalize homosexuality — including countries which impose the death penalty on gays.
Maybe it's just that I haven't noticed, but I don't recall seeing any major statements from the Vatican about torture or pre-emptive wars, or any such -- just quiet little statements that the Church opposes those sorts of things. Maybe it's just that the press can't resist something like this coming from such an obvious bunch of queens.
Archbishop Celestino Migliore said the Vatican opposed the resolution because it would “add new categories of those protected from discrimination” and could lead to reverse discrimination against traditional heterosexual marriage.
“If adopted, they would create new and implacable discriminations,” Migliore said. “For example, states which do not recognize same-sex unions as ‘matrimony’ will be pilloried and made an object of pressure,” Migliore said.
Well, as far as being pilloried, they should be. And gods forbid we should add new categories of people to be protected from discrimination. What is the world coming to, when you can't discriminate on the basis of your own unreasoning prejudices?
Remember that the pope has called separation of church and state "a myth."
