A last-minute amendment to give a politically appointed textbook commission final approval over books in Tennessee school libraries sparked a Capitol protest and heated debate in the General Assembly on Wednesday.We all now who else liked to burn books.On Wednesday morning, Rep. Jerry Sexton, R-Bean Station, withdrew the controversial amendment requiring the commission to issue its own list of approved materials, but submitted a new version requiring the commission to review the collections in every Tennessee school library.
But in the House debate on Wednesday, Sexton suggested he would take things a step further. “I would burn them,” Sexton said of books he considers inappropriate.
