On Wonder

You may have noticed that some posts carry the label "Wonder," particularly posts having to do with the natural world. That's because there is still a sense of wonder in the universe, perhaps borne of my own sense that we can never know everything. (I actually much prefer that to the certainty of what we're told.) And sometimes just because the universe is a place of marvels, whether it be the vastness of spiral galaxies so far away we can't even imagine the distance, or the intimacy of a tiny bird on your windowsill.

I once spent an hour and a half watching bugs from close up in the back yard, just amazed that something that small could not only be alive, but have things to do.

Being human, of course, my first impulse is to figure it out, but sometimes it's better, I think, just to sit there and enjoy it.

I like it that way.
