Teh Stoopid, in Brief

Via Ed Brayton's Dispatches from the Culture Wars, this bit, about a student at Indiana University who was cited for racial harassment for reading a book. Seriously. The details on the story are at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education's website.

Fortunately, that one had a resolution that owes something to sanity.

And of course, there's always Ben Stein (and the producers of Expelled), who are not only stupid but vicious.

Thanks to PZ Myers.

And from the land of stoopid, Florida, comes this one. Excuse me -- stage magic is wizardry? (The school district cites other reasons for dismissing the substitute, but somehow they don't quite ring true.)

Reading things like this just makes me wonder how it is that so many people apparently survive through childhood and adolescence into positions of responsibility without having developed a SHRED of common sense. And it seems the evidence is increasing that common sense will be dead by 2015 if not before. As my grandfather used to say, "I. Am. Depressed."
