Even-Handed

Pam Spaulding has a good, strong post on blow-back from the left over criticism of Obama's complete inaction on gay civil rights issues. (I mean, the best he can do is a proclamation for GLBT etc., etc., Pride Month? That's all?)

Call this one "required reading."

We know that he has a lot on his plate, BUT he is a highly skilled multi-tasker. Surely he could be doing something -- pressuring Congress, talking with the Supreme Court, pushing agencies other than the State Department, actually setting a timetable for the Pentagon. None of these actions is inconceivable on his part so, setting aside legalities which are confusing at best, there's no reason he couldn't be doing more than he is. I was initially inclined to cut him some slack because of the enormous challenges he faced, but he's basically swatting most of them aside; he has his administration working smoothly and cooperatively toward the goals he's set so far -- it's time for him to do more than mouth platitudes about Pride Week and fierce urgency.

And after watching the way things are unfolding since you left your comment, I have to say that whoever is formulating Obama's strategy vis-a-vis the gay community is not our friend. I smell the dirty hands of Rahm Emanuel here -- he's real good at placating the right. Or would be, if they could be placated.
